The Diesel and Dust Ride
Beginning in late May of 2005, Garrett and Houston Miller left their home in Barnesville, Maryland heading west. They rode two modified cyclocross bicycles each dragging a one-wheel trailer. Two months later they arrived at the Pacific Ocean SW of Portland, Oregon. Along the way they visited Houston's birthplace (Cumberland, MD), dropped in on graduation at Oberlin College (Ohio) which both attended (Garrett '06 and Houston '76). They visited old friends in Indiana and Iowa before joining the route of the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition in Sioux City, Iowa. From there they visited Dalis Davidson's childhood hometown (Mobridge, South Dakota) and partied on the fourth of July at the ranch of Marshall and Leslie Long in Lewistown, Montana. They also met many new friends along the way, some remebered by name and photographs in the Journal. We want you to participate in this ride too. How? Well we did this for ourselves, but we also did it to raise money for the Piedmont Environment and Education Foundation. By pledging a modest amount per mile, you can make a tax-deductible contribution to support environmental science education in Piedmont Maryland and the District of Columbia. More information about PEEF can be found here. Your on-line pledge can be made here. Finally, you can read about the trip and even write about it. The journey has just begun.
